Depiction: Chapel Hill

March 1 – May 31 2013

Depiction is an art installation that encourages community participation via smartphone.

To parasol b, mixing media means painting large QR codes that can be scanned with a smartphone to decode additional meaning. In the case of Depiction, the painted QR code reveals a map of sites around downtown Chapel Hill to go to, take a photograph according to certain instructions, and submit to a central website via another QR code. It all adds up to a virtual community art project online. Any smartphone with a QR scanner can be used, but for iPhone users there is a free parasol b app.

Depiction is a part of Windows on Chapel Hill, presented by the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and Town of Chapel Hill Public and Cultural Arts Office.

Download the parasol b app for the iPhone before visiting Depiction: Chapel Hill.

If you don’t have an iPhone, the full content of the encoded paintings is accessible by smartphones that have QR code scanning capability and web access. For all other major smartphones I recommend free i-nigma.

2. Charge your smartphone.

3. Find a friend to bring.

Walking Tours

parasol b will lead walking tours of the photo sites on the dates below. RSVP is not required, but is helpful. Also, let parasol know if you’d like to arrange a walking tour for your group on a different date. Attending a walking tour is a good way to experience the installation with a group or if you don’t have a smartphone; just bring your camera instead.

Walking tours are scheduled to be 2 hours, in order to go to all the photo sites, but participants can do as much or as little as they like. Tours start at Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe.

  • Saturday March 16, 2-4 PM (see event details on Facebook)
  • Saturday May 11, 2-4 PM (see event details on Facebook)
